Urban Interventions Personal Projects in Public Places

Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban and rural landscapes, these mostly spatial interventions bring art to the masses. They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery. Modified traffic signs, swings at bus stops, and images created out of sand or snow challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. The work is an intelligent and critical commentary on the planning, use, and commercialization of public space.

Leave it to Cedric Bernadotte to create ingenious ways to relax. This French artist using pallet wrapping plastic to create kick ass chairs, benches, swings, etc…

All Cedric Bernadotte needs for his artwork are people who need to take a quick seat and two objects spaced apart. Wonder how to make easy DIY furniture for the urban realm? The French artist Cedric Bernadotte came up with this interventions made from stretch plastic that’s usually being used for the sealing of cargo. The ultra flexible addition to the urban environment should be considered as a contribution to the debate about temporary use of public space. Setting up a shelter, hammock or couch changes perspective of users and stimulates thinking about other use of the streets.Although most other bloggers that wrote about this project consider the material to be tape, I persist thinking it’s sealing foil. Recently we’ve been doing some tests with this material ourselves, and turned out to be really strong. I’d like to see more of these interventions.

It’s amazing to watch the faces of passers-by light up when they see an unexpected place to perch momentarily. A swing in the middle of the city adds a touch of whimsy to anyone’s day, and a hammock in the sun provides the perfect spot for a mid-day nap. But most impressive of all is the fact that every piece of Bernadotte’s Street Interventions project is ephemeral; existing only temporarily and leaving no trace when it’s gone.
